How to entertain ourselves during lockdown?
This covid-19 pandemic has forced most of us to stay at home. Suddenly our home is playing multiple roles: work, fun & also relaxation. How can we combine the 3 and how long can we do this without getting bored or worse…claustrophobic?
Luckily, we have technology, TV series, books and well…Instagram! Being ‘entertained’ depends very much on the individual. Some people find excitement in reading a lot of books, other binge-watching series or movies on Netflix.
Sports is also an option. There’s been an increase in people exercising in front of their mobiles to join others doing the same from all over the world. Just follow Joe Wicks (@thebodycoach) on Instagram to see what I’m talking about. In the end, it’s up to people’s definition of entertainment.
I like a mix of everything: binge-watching is one of my favourites. I have subscriptions on Netflix and Now TV and even considering Disney+ (it’s only £5.99 per month… I guess the ‘only’ is how they get you). Books are also a favourite when watching series or movies gets repetitive. Hanging out virtually with friends can also be as equally good as the old pub night thanks to Zoom and House Party apps. Who would have thought? Maybe everything is better with a glass of wine. Or maybe two.
I’ve also started a volunteering job with the Lean In org in London (this is part of the movement started by Sherryl Sandberg – Facebook’s COO), in addition to my main full-time job, to help our community of Girlbosses remain connected during these turbulent times. In the past, we organised face-to-face events to discuss a relevant topic around Women Empowerment or Leadership and due to Covid-19 we swiftly moved to offer these events online. Our first-ever online event is happening this 22 Apr at 7 PM and couldn’t be more excited. The team and I virtually meet at least once a week after work hours and keep each other up to date via WhatsApp and Trello. Getting involved in not for profit projects or charity work outside your normal day job also helps to keep you entertained and occupied – especially when you are in lockdown. The fact that you’re investing your time in something that’s going to help other people is a very rewarding feeling too. For me, it’s a win-win.
